SIU Carbondale Mandatory Student Fees That Are Refundable

Of the mandatory student fees that are charged to students taking credit courses, undergraduate students may be allowed to apply for a refund of one or two of them, while graduate and professional students may be allowed to apply for a refund of one of them.  The following describe these fees, the conditions under which they may be refunded, and the process for requesting such a refund.

Student-to-Student (S-T-S) Grant Program Fee

The Student-to-Student (S-T-S) Grant Fee funds a student scholarship grant program for undergraduate students.  The fee is billed only to undergraduate students (the fee is not billed to graduate or professional students).

This fee is assessed a flat amount of $3.00 in each term of the undergraduate student's enrollment (Fall semester, Spring semester, and Summer session).

Undergraduates who do not wish to participate in the program may seek a refund of the S-T-S Fee by submitting a written request – using this form – to the Registrar's Office during or before the first two weeks of a Fall or Spring Semester (or the first week of a Summer Session).

The Registrar's Office is located on the 2nd floor of the Student Services Building, room 0251, of the main Carbondale campus.  The mailing address is noted on the form.

Student Insurance Fee

The Student Insurance Fee funds required medical insurance coverage.  The fee is billed to all on-campus students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional students), though it is not assessed to an on-campus student enrolled for the Summer session if the student was assessed the fee during the immediately preceding Spring semester.

This fee is assessed a flat amount in each term of the on-campus student's enrollment (except as just noted in the preceding paragraph).  The amount is based on actual market rate pricing by the vendor and is determined by plan enrollment, previous plan claims history, and medical inflation.  Upcoming fee amounts are $775.00 for Fall 2018, $775.00 for Spring 2019, and $290.00 for Summer 2019.

If the on-campus student believes that they have comparable medical insurance coverage, they may seek a refund of the Student Insurance Fee during or before the first two weeks of a Fall or Spring Semester (or the first week of a Summer Session) by contacting the Student Health Programs Insurance Department or by following the instructions on their web site.

The Student Health Programs Insurance Department is located within the Student Health Center on the main Carbondale campus.
