Starting with the Fall 2011 semester, resident and non-resident new first-time First Year and new transfer undergraduate students who have parent(s), stepparent(s), or legal guardian(s) who are graduates of SIU Carbondale (SIUC) may be able to pay an Alternate Tuition Rate (ATR) of 0.80 times the applicable undergraduate tuition rate.  The student will need to submit the Application for Legacy Alternate Tuition Rate and supporting documentation to the University in a timely manner in order to be considered for this ATR.¹

While many of the other ATRs offered by the University do not require intentional additional steps to be completed by the student in order to fulfill the ATR qualification process, the Legacy ATR does require extra steps.  Please note the following:

• an Application for Legacy Alternate Tuition Rate must be completed;
• supporting documentation noted on the application must be submitted with the application;
• the application and its supporting documentation must be submitted in a timely manner to the address noted on the application;
• late application packages cannot be accepted.

The Registrar's Office will review the completed application package to confirm whether the parent(s), stepparent(s), or legal guardian(s) listed on the application have actually graduated from SIUC.  If only one relative is listed on the application, but that relative has not graduated from SIUC, the student will not be approved for the Legacy ATR.  If multiple relatives are listed on the application, but none of them have graduated from SIUC, the student will not be approved for the Legacy ATR.

The undergraduate student who is approved for the Legacy ATR will be charged 0.8 times the otherwise applicable undergraduate tuition rate.  Please note the following about the tuition charge:

• SIU charges the undergraduate student a particular tuition rate, which is normally guaranteed for a certain amount of time;
• this tuition rate depends on factors such as when the student starts at SIU, their college, and where they come from;
• all other things being equal, an international student will normally pay a higher tuition rate than will a domestic student;
• starting Fall 2017, an out-of-state domestic student will normally pay an in-state tuition rate;
• the Legacy ATR tuition rate is 0.80 times the applicable (in-state or out-of-state) tuition rate for that student;
• the 0.80 tuition rate factor is the same regardless of the number of SIUC graduates related to the student;
• a student may qualify for more than one ATR, but they cannot use more than one ATR in a term to determine their tuition rate;
• students can estimate their tuition and fee charges using our online calculators.

The previous paragraph describes tuition charges.  Many students will end up paying an amount that is less than the stated tuition charge due to various types of credits.  These credits do not change the tuition rate or the total tuition charge; rather, they assist the student in paying for the tuition that SIUC is obligated to charge.  Please note the following:

• any scholarships or grants do not change the tuition rate that is charged, but help offset the amount that the student will pay;
• tuition waivers do not change the tuition rate that is charged, but help offset the amount that the student will pay.

This Alternate Tuition Rate will not apply to students who are pursuing graduate or professional degrees.  It also will not apply to students who started at SIUC prior to the semester noted above.

Effective Fall 2017, this Alternate Tuition Rate continues to be offered to qualifying undergraduate students.

¹ If you fail to apply for the Legacy ATR prior to the deadline within your first term at SIUC, you will no longer qualify for it at a later time.
